How to avoid overdosing and get real results with your serums and supplements

Vitamin C is one of the most popular nutrients in the world – and one of the most misunderstood. From glowing skin promises to immune boosting, it’s often overused, under-absorbed or taken incorrectly.

Here’s how adult properly with your vitamin C – without wasting money, irritating your skin or stressing your body.

What vitamin C actually does

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is essential for :

  • collagen synthesis (skin, joints, blood vessels)
  • immune cell function
  • antioxidant protection (neutralising free radicals)
  • iron absorption (especially plant-based iron)

Your body cannot store large amounts of vitamin C. What it doesn’t use, it ends up excreting- which is why more is not always better.

Do Get your baseline from food first

Whole foods provide vitamin C in physiological doses, along with flavonoids that improve absorption.

High-Vitamin-C Foods :

  • citrus fruit
  • kiwi
  • strawberries
  • bell peppers
  • broccoli & leafy greens

Adulting rule :

If you eat fruit and veg daily, you’re likely already meeting your basic needs.

Don’t Mega-dose “just in case”

More vitamin C does not guarantee a stronger immunity.

Excess supplementation can cause :

  • gastrointestinal upset (nausea, diarrhoea, stomach cramps)
  • increased risk of kidney stones (especially in predisposed individuals)
  • reduced absorption efficiency over time

Upper safe limit for adults :

For short bursts of immune boosting – roughly 2000mg per day (though not everyday)

Optimal intake for most people is roughly 200-500mg per day

Do Match the Dose to the Context

Different situations call for different strategies

  • daily maintenance : 200-500mg
  • high-stress/intense training/illness: short-term dose of 500-100mg
  • chronic daily mega-dosing NOT recommended

Vitamin C works best when the maintenance dose is taken consistently not aggressively.

Don’t Take High Doses at Once

Vitamin C absorption is dose-dependent.

Large single doses overwhelm transporters in the gut and the excess gets excreted.

The best approach is to split doses :

Try 250mg in the morning and 250mg later in the day

Do Understand vitamin C Serums vs Supplements

They are not interchangeable and serve different biological roles.

Supplements :

  • support immune function and collagen production from the inside
  • systemic effect
  • dose matters

Serums :

  • act locally on the skin
  • improve brightness, lighten hyperpigmentation and improves collagen signalling
  • absorption depends on formulation and pH
  • potent
  • do not layer vitamin C serums
  • do not use too high a concentration too soon
  • don’t mix with other incompatible active ingredients
  • don’t apply onto compromised skin barrier

You can and often should use both ,but correctly.

Do Use the Right vitamin C form for Your Skin

Not all vitamin C is created equal :

  • L-ascorbic acid (10-20%) : most evidence-based, but can irritate sensitive skin
  • Derivatives (e.g. sodium ascorbyl phosphate): gentler, more stable, slower results

Apply in the morning, followed by moisturiser and sunscreen.

Vitamin C serums without sunscreen is a wasted effort.

Don’t Combine Blindly with Everything

Vitamin C plays well with some active ingredients and poorly with others.

Generally safe combinations :

  • vitamin C & sunscreen
  • vitamin C & niacinamide (modern formulations)

Use caution with :

  • strong exfoliating acids
  • retinoids (especially for beginners)

If your skin stings, burns or flakes – it’s not “working”, it’s irritated.

Do Support Absorption Internally

Your body uses vitamin C more efficiently when :

  • you’re adequately hydrated
  • you’re not chronically stressed
  • you’re getting enough protein (collagen synthesis requires amino acids)

Vitamin C is a co-factor; not a magic wand.

Don’t Expect Instant Results

Vitamin C is a support nutrient, not a shortcut.

Use it :

  • thoughtfully
  • in appropriate doses
  • in forms that suit your lifestyle and skin

Adulting well means knowing when enough is enough.

I’m a sucker for the Disney Classics . And though I appreciate a good Studio Ghibli , there’s something so well-balanced and simply comprehensive about the Grimm Faerie Tales . Especially those retold through the very rose-tinted lenses of the World of Disney . Simple storyline – good girl ,bad world , her blindness to …
