Our minds are like the ocean . Endless streams of thought ebbing and flowing , tides of emotion rising and crashing in cycles that gravitate towards their moon. The silken supple motion of creation and destruction all held together by the salt of logic and order .And the chaos that paves the path for harmony . After all , water is the stuff of life . But what happens when the tides become too strong, and the thinker drowns in thought ?

I am no longer ashamed to say that my pre-frontal cortex is constantly in overdrive . I’m an unnecessarily highly enthusiastic individual and it often lands me into trouble, gets me misunderstood or gets me into things way over my head . It also means I over-analyse everyday tasks like a bedtime routine or breakfast or chores . Take chores ,for example , I would have to write down the order in which I’m about to clean as well as the tools and product I’ll be using to do it with . I have baskets for each room with the step-by-step order written down ,the cloths and products specifically for that room to make it easier for me to not be overwhelmed by trying to plan out the cleaning routine when the time comes . Super silly ,but THAT’S how badly it influences me .

The Great Wave of hyperfrontality

Although I never got a formal diagnosis for ADHD , ADD or ASD (doctor felt it was unnecessary) , and I’m not sure why I think the way I do , I have to admit one thing : Defeat gives me clarity.

Don’t get me wrong , it’s still freaking sad . But the minute my mind saddles up to go all Great Wave on me, I don’t always get the benefit of all that momentum and mental energy. My mind gets flooded with inspiration and everything becomes a thing I need to overthink, deconstruct and reconstruct . Everything that is actually simple , gets turned into a complex problem . To the detriment of my time and my energy .

I know it sounds brutal ,but due to recent experiences (which I’ll explain in another post), I’ve been left feeling absolutely hopeless . Not in an it’s the end of the world kind of way but in a “okay,I’ve played all my cards and bet on everything I am ,it’s time to fold up” kind of way. I met my wave-breaker rock just as I was about to hit the shore of I-don’t -know-where with full force . And maybe that’s a good thing, maybe you need that break to shut up the pre-frontal cortex. The obsession to always plan everything perfectly, the need for life to be within your control, the need to deconstruct simple tasks into overly complicated procedures because you don’t know how to trust that it’ll work out fine even if you don’t – that’s no sustainable way to live .

I’d noticed that cleaning is SO much easier when I’m in this defeated state of mind . In fact, everything is ! I have no enthusiasm that can be disappointed, no anticipation to abandon . It’s quieter and so relieving to not overthink how you’re gonna wipe down a mirror .

Perhaps , unknowingly , when we venture forth at full speed without taking a moment to regain control,we risk flooding the most fragile and functional parts of our selves and our lives .

I’m not saying you should give up on life and go with the flow , I’m just saying – go with the flow.

If you’re like me, here are some neat products/tools to help you reach constructive hypofrontality without needing to feel defeated in life :

I’m a sucker for the Disney Classics . And though I appreciate a good Studio Ghibli , there’s something so well-balanced and simply comprehensive about the Grimm Faerie Tales . Especially those retold through the very rose-tinted lenses of the World of Disney . Simple storyline – good girl ,bad world , her blindness to …

My people are tearing at their own flesh. Like children tear at scabs. Impatient with the irresistible resistance the skin displays when it reluctantly comes together again . *** The history of South Africa does not fit the mainstream black-and-white narrative that frequents international media and movies like Wakanda . Our history begins in Cape …
